Paul Ryan was No. 2 on the Republicans' presidential ballot in 2012, and the Wisconsin congressman is thinking about whether he'll try to move to the top of his party's ticket in 2016.

When asked Sunday about the possibility of running, Ryan said he and his family will "take very seriously and weigh" the decision next year. Ryan has said he is not eager to spend even more time away from his small Wisconsin hometown where he and his wife, Janna, have raised their own family.

Ryan tells CBS' "Face the Nation" his new book, "The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea," aims to unify conservatives on tackling the nation's most critical problems.

"What I am trying to do with this book is is to help design a unified conservative Republican movement that is principled, inclusive and aspirational so that we can win a majority of the American's votes to save this country from what I believe is going on, down the wrong track."

Ryan says he and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney lost in 2012 for many reasons.

"I think there are a whole multitude of reasons why we didn't win," he said. "Mitt and I discussed it, we need to give voter a meaningful choice."

And he said he wishes Romney would run again.

"I sure wish he would [run]. I think he would make a phenomenal president. He has the temperament to be a fantastic president I wish everybody could see the guy I know," Ryan added.

"As far as myself and my family, this is a decision we are going to take very seriously and weigh in 2015, so I just don't know the answer to your question at this time."
