House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said prayers are being answered for the recovery of wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La.

"Most of us have gone to see him or we've spoken with him and he's making a very good recovery," Ryan said. "Our prayers are being answered."

His comments came in an interview with Fox News' "Fox & Friends" host Brian Kilmeade that aired Wednesday morning.

Pointing to a chair Scalise normally uses for House leadership meetings, Ryan added: "This is where he normally sits. We're keeping his seat right here vacant until he returns."

Scalise and four others were wounded on June 14 when a gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers who were practicing for a charity baseball game. He suffered a pierced hip, severe bleeding and damage to his internal organs, Politico reported.

The gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, was shot and killed.
