Pew Poll: 59% of Americans Oppose US-Mexico Wall

The latest Pew Research Center  poll indicates Americans are divided about GOP front-runner Donald Trump's plan for building a 2,000-mile-long wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, but overall, more than half oppose the idea.

The poll of 2,254 adults, conducted March 17-27, found:

  • 59 percent overall oppose the wall
  • 38 percent overall support it
  • 67 percent of Republicans approve it
  • 86 percent of Democrats oppose it

GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump has centered much of his campaign agenda around building a strong wall between the countries, and the poll reveals that most of his supporters back that plan:

  • 84 percent of Donald Trump's supporters favor a wall;
  • 64 percent of Ted Cruz's supporter want a wall and 42 percent do not;
  • 53 percent of John Kasich's supporters oppose a wall and 45 percent approve of one.
  • 91 percent of Bernie Sanders' voters oppose it;
  • 83 percent of Hillary Clinton's supporter oppose a wall.

The poll also revealed divided opinions on immigrants in the United States.

  • 56 percent of Republicans consider them a burden
  • 78 percent of Democrats call them a benefit
  • 70 percent of Trump supporters claim immigrants burden the U.S.
  • 51 percent of Cruz's supporters say immigrants are a burden
  • 50 percent of Kasich supports say immigrants benefit the nation

There were also differing views on illegal immigration, depending on party and candidate supported:

  • 52 percent of Trump supporters reject a pathway to citizenship
  • 40 percent of Cruz supporters want all illegal immigrants to be deported with no legal recourse
  • 25 percent of Kasich supporter favor deportation
  • 32 percent of Republicans overall call for deportation
