Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly says the group's board of directors is meeting to force her ouster over her recent endorsement of Donald Trump for the GOP presidential nomination.
Eagle Forum has officially endorsed Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
"This may be my Dobson moment, Schlafly told the website
WND.
In 2010, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson was forced by his board to end the national radio program he had hosted for decades.
"The six board members calling today's telephone meeting won't tell me what the meeting is about, but I think it’s an attempt to vote me out," Schlafly told WND. "It's disloyal and it's terribly shocking, and I'm completely depressed about it. I may be one vote short to win today."
The six board members set to attend the meeting include Schlafly's daughter Anne Cori, whom Schlafly said may be the "leader of the coup" in an attempt to take over.
Schlafly's son John Schlafly is Eagle Forum's treasurer and a board member. He told WND the six board members holding the meeting "feel Donald Trump is unacceptable as the GOP presidential candidate in 2016."
Also at issue may be Schlafly's opposition to a so-called "Con Con," or constitutional convention that would add a balanced budget amendment. Schlafly maintains that there is no guarantee a balanced budget amendment would make it into the Constitution while liberals would get a chance to take over the convention and make changes conservatives would oppose.
Among those attending the meeting are Eunie Smith, Shirley Curry, Carolyn McLarty, Rosina Kovar, Cathie Adams and Cori.
Adams, who recently left her longtime position as president of Texas Eagle Forum to seek the vice presidency of the state GOP, told
The Dallas Morning News in March that Schlafly may have endorsed Trump because she is out of touch.
"At 91, it is just totally unfair to impose upon someone who has such a beautiful legacy," Adams said. "I think this was very much a manipulation. When you’re 91 and you’re not out with the grass roots all the time, it is very much taking advantage of someone."
Schlafly took that as a slam on her age. She posted onto Facebook:
She has asked the board members who are meeting to resign, saying the meeting does not follow the group's bylaws and excludes the group's president, Ed Martin.
Martin told WND the six board members refused to tell him or Schlafly what the meeting is about.
"Ousting Phyllis is a possibility," Adams admitted to the website. "I don’t want to forecast what’s going to happen in a meeting that hasn’t been held, but among the issues on the table is Ed Martin’s character and his management style."
