PJ O'Rourke: '60s Losers Are Today's Professors

By    |   Tuesday, 20 May 2014 03:21 PM EDT ET

P.J. O'Rourke says he knows why college campuses stifle free speech — such as Rutgers University, some of whose faculty and students got former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to back out of delivering a commencement speech.

"If you're looking for the fundamental problem, it would be the old coots my age, victims of the '60s, the real loser element,'' O'Rourke told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"Some of us came to our senses at least partially, but the real losers wound up in academia and the long march through academia, and all this '60s gibberish lives on on our campuses.

"By now, these people are in their 60s, in their 50s, and they're in powerful positions . . .  Americans, your people are being taught by lunatics, especially in the softer subjects like history of film and stuff,'' he said Tuesday.

Rice, who was invited to speak to graduating seniors, pulled out after some faculty members and students accused her of allegedly misleading the nation on the Iraq war and condoning torture during her time in the Bush administration.

The protest left O'Rourke — a Daily Beast contributor and author of "The Baby Boom: How It Got That Way (And It Wasn’t My Fault) (And I’ll Never Do It Again),'' published by Atlantic Monthly Press — perplexed.

"It's not exactly like Condoleezza Rice was the big hawk in the nest at the George W. Bush administration," O'Rourke said.

"People forget that there was a general agreement, including the U.N., that Saddam Hussein had a high probability of having weapons of mass destruction. And it was a situation that Saddam Hussein did nothing to disabuse the world of.

"He apparently had been smart enough to get rid of his weapons of mass destruction, but he didn't want anybody to know that."
