A man driving a silver Audi smashed into a New York City police cruiser Wednesday evening, narrowly missing two officers as he shouted that he wanted to "kill cops."
The assault was the latest attempt on the lives of New York police officers, after two were assassinated nearly three weeks ago and two more were wounded by armed robbers Monday.
New York Port Authority Police arrested Matthew Christian Cash, 24, after he slammed his car into the police cruiser at the Holland Tunnel at about 8 p.m.
Cash struggled with police, shouting, "I want to kill cops,"
The New York Post reported Thursday.
"He was putting up a fight," eyewitness Michael Rosselli told the Post. "They had to get him into the cruiser. He was kicking at the window trying to get out. They had medics on standby."
Cash, a resident of Easton, Pennsylvania, was arrested with synthetic marijuana in his car, police said. He also claimed to be high on "angel dust," or phencyclidine, a drug that can cause violent behavior.
Cash — who has been arrested before on charges of assault, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment — was taken to Bellevue Hospital, which is noted for its psychiatric facilities.
