A survey of eight countries shows people fear World War III could break out.

The poll that surveyed nearly 9,000 people, conducted by the international market research firm YouGov.com, asked how close they believe the world is today to a major war.

According to the results:

  • U.S.: 64 percent.
  • France: 64 percent.
  • Germany: 63 percent.
  • Britain: 61 percent.
  • Finland: 52 percent.
  • Sweden: 48 percent.
  • Norway: 46 percent.
  • Denmark: 45 percent.

The poll also found Russia is considered to be "a major or significant military threat to the rest of Europe."

Between 59 percent and 71 percent of people consider Russia to be a big threat, with people from Britain and the Nordic countries the most concerned, YouGov said.

In another finding, citizens of the major western nations surveyed — Britain, France, Germany and the U.S. — are "clearly braced for a big terror attack in 2017," the website said.

In France, which has suffered two major terrorist attacks in the past 14 months, as many as 81 percent of people think a major terror attack is likely in 2017, including 35 percent who think one is very likely, according to YouGov.

The survey was conducted over 19 days in November and December.
