President-elect Donald Trump's deal with Carrier Corp. — the maker of air conditioners persuaded to keep jobs in Indiana instead of shipping them to Mexico — is highly popular with a majority of voters, according to the latest Politico/Morning Consult poll released Tuesday.
According to the poll, Trump is viewed more favorably because of the deal:
- More favorably: 60 percent.
- Less favorably: 9 percent.
- No impact on how they view Trump: 22 percent.
Breaking down the results by party affiliation:
- Republicans: 87 percent.
- Independents: 54 percent.
- Democrats: 40 percent.
Among those who voted for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton:
• Trump voters: 89 percent.
• Clinton voters: 32 percent.
"The Carrier announcement was big for Trump. Rarely do we see numbers that high when looking at how specific messages and events shape public opinion," said Kyle Dropp, co-founder of Morning Consult.
Some 46 percent also approve raising taxes on companies that move jobs overseas.
Breaking that number down by party affiliation:
- Republicans: 53 percent.
- Democrats: 43 percent.
Just over half – 51 percent — say they supported the president-elect and vice-president negotiating directly with private companies.
By party affiliation:
- Democrats: 37 percent.
- Republicans: 69 percent.
- Independents: 48 percent.
Majority of voters also approve tax breaks and contracts being offered to keep jobs in the U.S.
- Tax breaks or incentives: 62 percent.
- Government contracts: 60 percent.
- Negotiating with individual companies on case by case basis: 56 percent.
The poll also found that 58 percent think keeping manufacturing jobs in the U.S. should be a top priority for Trump and the next Congress, while defeating the Islamic State came in second — 63 percent.
The poll of 1,401 registered voters was conducted Dec. 1 and 2, after Carrier announced the deal.
