China is offering an $86,500 reward to people who report illicit content, including porn, to the authorities, doubling the current compensation, according to Tech In Asia.
The National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications started paying people to report illicit content in 2009. Last week, the agency issued New Measures for Rewarding Reporting on Eradicating Pornography and Illegal Content, which became effective Dec. 1.
The campaign, known as "Clean Up the Pornographic, Strike the Illegal," also upped the reward for flagging content that "endangers ideological security, cultural security, physical and mental health of minors" to $7,200.
According to state media, thousands of websites have already been taken down this year and artists have warned followers to not share work that could be illicit or considered illicit as anyone found guilty of watching, sharing or creating erotic material are being given serious jail time.
Last month, Chinese writer Lady Tianyi received a 10-year prison sentence for "producing and selling pornographic materials."
The book she was jailed for included "graphic depictions of male homosexual scenes" tinged with violence.
