At least one patient in Puerto Rico was seen eating dog food in the wake of Hurricane Maria and the devastation the storm left behind, CNN reported Tuesday.
President Donald Trump visited the storm-ravaged island Tuesday and met with officials, first responders, volunteers, and victims. CNN correspondent Leyla Santiago reported on some of what she has seen on the ground.
Santiago explained a conversation she had with a mayor on the island who "was holding back tears."
Mediaite posted a clip of the report.
"He is seeing people day to day, and he's saying the desperation is getting out of hand," Santiago said of the mayor she referenced. "He told me [Monday] he had to deal with a gentleman who was about to commit suicide.
"I spoke to a doctor that was right next to him who told me that one of his patients was eating dog food. Patients eating dog food in a clinic."
Santiago noted she is seeing more aid from FEMA, "but there is still so much more that is needed when you just talk to people here."
