Rand Paul: GOP 'Brand is Broken'

In a move not common just days before a major midterm election, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is saying the Republican brand is "broken."

Paul appeared on three Sunday morning shows this week, explaining his comment on Thursday that the GOP brand " especially when it comes to attracting black voters.

Appearing on"Face the Nation," Paul explained, "I don’t think what we stand for is bad," but added, "we have a wall, or a barrier, between us and African-American voters."

Paul said he has "mixed feelings" on voter ID laws. While he sees the need for them to prevent voter fraud, he said it shouldn't be a campaign theme for Republicans since black voters perceive the GOP as trying to suppress their votes.

Instead, he said, Republicans should focus on restoring voting rights to non-violent convicted felons.

Paul said he expects the GOP to take control of the Senate, and wouldn't be surprised if they take 10 seats.

"You could see a wave here at the end," he told "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer.

Such an outcome would be "a repudiation of the president's policies," Paul told "Meet the Press." "This is a referendum of the president."

A GOP Senate would immediately start passing bills, he said, noting that the current House passed 400 bills, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid refused to take them up.

Paul still won't say whether he plans a 2016 White House run, but he has stumped for more than 30 candidates this election cycle.

"It's not just about me, but I'm trying to promote policies the party will listen to," he told CNN's "State of the Union." "The fact people invited me to 32 states means Republicans are recognizing the force of these ideas."
