More than half of voters believe that a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico should not be built, according to a Rasmussen poll released Monday.
In the poll:
- 56 percent of likely U.S. voters believe that the U.S. should not build a wall along the border with Mexico to combat illegal immigration.
- 37 percent of likely U.S. voters are in favor of the border wall.
Support for building the wall has declined since January, before President Donald Trump's inauguration. At that time, 48 percent of voters were in favor of it.
Breaking down the results by party affiliation:
- 48 percent of Republicans want the U.S. to build the wall.
- 74 percent of Democrats do not want the U.S. to build it.
- 55 percent of voters not affiliated with either party do not want the wall.
Trump's administration is pushing ahead with plans for the wall. On July 11, House Republicans released a spending bill that included $1.6 billion for the wall.
The Rasmussen poll was conducted among 1,000 likely voters July 26 and July 27, with a 3-percent margin of error, according to the poll report.
