Rasmussen: Highest-ever Support for Reduced Government Spending

Nearly three out of every four voters want Washington to slash spending, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll.

Overall 73 percent of likely voters believe the federal government should cut its spending rather than increase it, the survey reported.

Just 18 percent believe an increase in federal spending is a better solution to the country’s economic woes.

“That’s consistent with earlier data showing that just 19 percent want to see more stimulus spending at this time,” reported Rasmussen.

President Barack Obama is calling for a further $200 billion spending binge in an attempt to stimulate the economy, believing that will help the country overcome the fiscal cliff. But the poll shows the American public does not agree.

Urgent: Will Raising Taxes Help or Hurt America?

“The number of voters who believe spending should be cut is up nine points from last month and is the highest level measured to date,” Rasmussen said in its report of the poll.

But one-in-three voters prefer “a larger government with more services and higher taxes to one with fewer services and lower taxes,” Rasmussen said. “That's up 10 points from a month ago and the highest level of support for bigger government measured in more than six years.”

The survey of 1,000 likely voters nationwide was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday.
