Rep. Escobar: Trump Should Not Visit El Paso

Rep. Veronica Escobar, whose district in El Paso includes the Walmart where Saturday's mass shooting took place, said Monday that if President Donald Trump intends to visit her community, she hopes he has the "self-awareness" to understand that the community is in pain and that he should not come there while people are in pain and are mourning.

"I first want to say that I live in an extraordinary community," the Texas Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "We welcome the stranger, we take care of the vulnerable. And that is who El Paso is and I'm so proud to be a member of this community."

At the same time, she said "words have consequences" and Trump has "made my community and my people the enemy."

"He has told the country that we are people to be feared, people to be hated," said Escobar. "He has done that at his rallies. He has done that through his Twitter."

She added that if Trump is planning a trip, she would ask his staff and team to "consider the fact that his words and his actions have played a role in this."

Escobar pointed out that there were "incredible acts of heroism" during the shootings that claimed 20 lives and injured dozens more, but said the murders happened because Hispanics have been "dehumanized" by Trump and his "enablers, by other politicians."

"This is one of the lowest points in American history and if we don't recognize this as such, we will not have the turning point that we so desperately need as a country," the lawmaker said.
