Bill Richardson: US Needs to Work with Putin

Bill Richardson, who was U.N. ambassador under President Bill Clinton, on Sunday sounded a little like GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump on Sunday, saying, "America and Russia need to work with each other."

In an appearance on "The Cats Roundtable" on AM 970 in New York, Richardson also appeared to take a swipe at Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, when he said, the United States and Russia "have not worked with each other in the last five years."

Hillary Clinton served as secretary of state during the first term of President Barack Obama, whom Richardson endorsed over Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primaries.

"We need cooperation in Syria," Richardson told host John Catsimatidis. "We need Russia to stop meddling in the Ukraine. But we also need Russia when it comes to arms control agreements. We need them to keep Iran contained. We need them for energy, for eliminating nuclear weapons."

Richardson called a "shame" the two countries aren't getting along.

"They're not friends, but they're not enemies," he said.
