Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday called for a special session of the Florida Legislature to address several issues, including how the state will deal with illegal immigration under President-elect Donald Trump.

DeSantis said the legislature needs to prepare for sweeping immigration policy changes under Trump, who will take office Jan. 20.

"This is the time to get it right once and for all," DeSantis said of immigration policies during a press conference. "We are going to need — in order to do that — legislation to impose additional duties on local officials, and provide funding for those local officials."

DeSantis threatened to suspend local officials if they don't follow Florida mandates on immigration.

DeSantis also said the special session, which will begin Jan. 27, will include legislation for hurricane relief, relief for condo owners, and reforming the "petition and amendment" process for amending the state constitution.

Condo owners have endured increased financial burdens since the 2021 Surfside condominium collapse in the Miami area.
