Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., will attempt to force a vote on a subpoena involving Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian energy firm connected to former Vice President Joe Biden's son.
In a letter to his colleagues on the panel, Johnson outline his "intention to schedule a business meeting to consider a committee subpoena" of a former consultant for a company that represented Burisma in the U.S., Blue Star Strategies, according to The Hill.
"As part of the committee's ongoing investigation, it has received U.S. government records indicating that Blue Star sought to leverage Hunter Biden's role as a board member of Burisma to gain access to, and potentially influence matters at, the State Department," Johnson wrote.
The ranking Democrat on the committee, Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., told Johnson he objects to a subpoena out of concern for how it could help Russian disinformation efforts, but the Republicans who control the panel would not need any Democratic support for a subpoena in order to issue one.
Republicans have spent months investigating Burisma and Hunter Biden over his former position on the company's board and whether it created a conflict of interest for former Vice President Biden, who was heavily involved in diplomatic efforts in Ukraine during the Obama administration.
