Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., says thousands of people have died because doctors have ignored treating COVID-19 patients early with the use of alternative drugs.
''Thousands of people have died because we’ve ignored it. That’s a question we’re asking: why?'' Johnson said Wednesday during an appearance on Newsmax TV’s ''Spicer & Co.''
''There’s a host of things we should have explored, we should be using, we should be letting doctors be doctors. And we should be celebrating their courage and their compassion rather than raking them over the coals and calling them names. … this is ridiculous.''
Johnson in November held a Homeland Security hearing where he talked about alternative treatments, a move for which he was criticized.
"Why has there been so much resistance to low-cost, off-the-shelf therapies that might stop the progression of COVID-19?" Johnson asked at the time.
His hearing included testimony from three doctors who promoted the use of hydroxychloroquine to fight the virus.
''The current NIAI guidelines for COVID is do nothing, send people home scared, afraid, give them no treatment whatsoever, explore no treatment, and if you get sick enough go to the hospital. Nobody wants to go to the hospital and potentially if you die in the hospital you never see your family ever again. That is not compassion and care,'' Johnson said.
