Florida Sen. Marco Rubio says he had to interrupt his Tuesday night speech to drink water because “God has a funny way of reminding us that we’re human.”
Rubio gave the official Republican rebuttal to President Obama’s State of the Union speech. But about 11 minutes into his address, he suddenly ducked down nearly out of the camera frame to reach for a small bottle of water, which he sipped from before continuing with his remarks.
The move produced a flood of tweets and massive coverage in the media.
Time magazine recently called Rubio a Republican savior. In an exclusive interview with Newsmax TV on Wednesday, he was asked what he thinks of all the attention he has been receiving even for things like grabbing a sip of water.
“First of all, there are no saviors in politics. There’s only one Savior and it’s not me,” he says.
“I needed water. Usually at a speech you have a podium and the water’s there but we didn’t have that last night. So as I said earlier today to someone else who asked me about that, God has a funny way of reminding us that we’re human.”
