Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats have requested that the FBI send its file on President-elect Donald Trump's attorney general nominee Matt Gaetz, Politico reported on Wednesday.
Democrat members of the Judiciary Committee asked for the evidentiary file from law enforcement's investigation into whether Gaetz engaged in child sex trafficking, according to a letter sent to FBI Director Christopher Wray and obtained by Politico.
The letter was signed by all Democrats on the committee except for Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff.
Gaetz, the former Florida congressman who resigned last week after Trump announced plans to nominate him as attorney general, has denied all wrongdoing.
The Department of Justice closed the probe into Gaetz without bringing charges.
"In order for the Senate to perform its constitutional duty in this instance, we must be able to thoroughly review all relevant materials that speak to the credibility of these serious allegations against Mr. Gaetz," the letter from the senators reads.
The Democrats said that the allegations against Gaetz are "significant," since his associate, Joel Greenberg, pled guilty to the sex trafficking charge for which Gaetz was also investigated, according to The Hill.
The senators emphasized that "the grave public allegations against Mr. Gaetz speak directly to his fitness to serve as the chief law enforcement officer for the federal government."
