One third of women have experienced sexual harassment or abuse in their workplace, a new poll from PBS NewsHour, NPR, and Marist Poll found.
Respondents were asked if they had personally experienced sexual harassment or abuse from another person where they work:
- 22 percent of all respondents said yes.
- 77 percent of all respondents said no.
- 35 percent of women said yes.
- 65 percent of women said no.
- 9 percent of men said yes.
- 91 percent of men said no.
The majority of respondents said their employer does enough to protect against harassment and abuse:
- 87 percent of all said yes.
- 88 percent of men said yes.
- 85 percent of women said yes.
The pollsters also asked who is more likely to be believed in the case of workplace sexual harassment or abuse:
- 64 percent said the accuser.
- 18 percent said the accused.
Marist, in collaboration with NPR and PBS NewsHour, contacted 1,019 adults by phone from Nov. 13-15, and the poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
