The majority of Americans support single-payer healthcare, according to a Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll released on Friday.
The poll shows:
- 51 percent of Americans support single-payer, while 43 percent oppose it
- 74 percent of Democrats support it, as do 54 percent of independents
- But 80 percent of Republicans oppose single-payer
Single-payer healthcare is financed by taxes that cover the costs of essential healthcare for all. According to the Physicians for a National Heath Program group, all residents of the U.S. would be covered for all medically necessary services, including doctor, hospital, preventive, long-term care, mental health, reproductive health care, dental, vision, prescription drug and medical supply costs.
The Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation survey also found that the Affordable Care Act -- Obamacare -- continues to be supported by majority of Americans, with 53 percent for it and 41 percent against.
The random poll of 1,850 people was conducted Jan. 24-Feb. 22 and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
