Billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros has contributed $5.1 million to Democracy PAC, a super PAC he created to set up his operation for the 2020 election cycle, according to paperwork filed with the Federal Election Commission, Politico reports.

Other family members may contribute to the PAC, according to a person familiar with the PAC who spoke with Politico.

Soros poured $20.1 million into the 2016 presidential election on behalf of Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, and spent a record $17 million backing Democratic causes during the 2018 election cycle, which saw Democrats seize the majority in the House.

The report comes ahead of the second Democratic presidential debate where candidates had to fulfill one of two criteria: either get 65,000 donations to their campaigns, with at least 200 donors in 20 different states or obtain at least 1% in three polls recognized as legitimate by the committee.

Soros has yet to back a candidate and likely won’t because “he thinks there are several good candidates,” according to Michael Vachon, Soros’ chief spokesman.
