Evangelical Christian colleges in South Carolina are pleading with Gov. Nikki Haley to help them "promote religious freedom" by fighting regulations on the use of bathrooms by transgender students.
The pleas came in a letter signed by the presidents of Bob Jones University, Columbia International University, Anderson University, Charleston Southern University, Erskine College, North Greenville University and Southern Wesleyan University.
The educators point to a California proposal that would bar college students from taking advantage of grant programs if their schools violated the state's gender-identity rules, The State newspaper reported.
They also said the Obama administration's requirement that public schools let transgender students use bathrooms in line with their chosen gender violates "the privacy and modesty of students" of those who object on religious grounds.
