Twenty-four percent of likely Democratic Party primary voters in South Carolina favor former Vice President Joe Biden – putting him in first place in the state according to a new Winthrop University poll.

Coming in second was Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., with 19%.

Here is how the rest of the candidates polled:

  • 15%--billionaire Tom Steyer
  • 7%--former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg
  • 6%--Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
  • 4% for Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn.
  • 1% for Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is not on the ballot in the state and was not included in the poll, which was released on Friday.

In the Winthrop September poll, Biden was in the lead with 37% supporting him. Warren was in second place with 17%.

“Flames seem to be licking through the cracks in Biden’s firewall,” said Scott Huffmon, director of the Winthrop poll.  “His support has dropped by double digits since the late September Winthrop Poll.”

The poll, conduced Feb. 9-19, surveyed 443 likely voters for the Democrats’ primary in South Carolina. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.7 percentage points.
