The House Majority Leader says Democrats could possibly sue if President Donald Trump declares a national emergency on the nation’s southern border in order to build his long-promised wall.
Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said experts have said neither a wall nor fencing is what’s really needed at the border — but rather technology, drones and additional personnel, Roll Call reported Tuesday.
In a news briefing, Hoyer said Democratic leadership hasn’t yet discussed a lawsuit if Trump delivers on the national crisis declaration he’s considering — but said it’s a possibility.
“It is analogous to governments that we have seen all over the world declaring martial law, and justifying them in doing whatever they wanted to do to whomever they wanted to do it, whenever they wanted to do it,” Hoyer said of the threatened move, The Hill reported.
“We don’t think that’s the American way; we don’t think that’s the constitutional way.”
