House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer remained in a Washington hospital on Wednesday after being admitted earlier this week for pneumonia.

"Mr. Hoyer was admitted to the George Washington University Hospital yesterday and was diagnosed with pneumococcal pneumonia," Katie Grant, spokeswoman for the Maryland Democrat, told Politico in a statement.

"He is being treated with antibiotics and resting, and is expected to make a full recovery quickly," she said. "He looks forward to being back at work very soon."

Hoyer, 79, the No. 2 House Democrat for over 15 years, has said that he hopes to succeed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California when she retires.

According to Politico, Hoyer spent the weekend campaigning with Democratic incumbents and candidates in swing districts in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Hoyer also visited a community health center in Chicago, among other events.

The Midwestern visit marked Hoyer's 25th campaign trip this election cycle, Politico reports.
