Film financier and philanthropist Steve Bing died Monday after jumping off the 27th floor of a luxury apartment building in Los Angeles, reports Deadline.

Bing backed movies from Robert Zemeckis' "The Polar Express" and "Beowulf" and Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stone concert film "Shine a Light."

Bing, also an influential progressive political donor, began his career in Hollywood after inheriting $600 million from his real estate developer grandfather during his junior year of college.

He leaves two children behind, including a son with Elizabeth Hurley and daughter with former pro tennis player Lisa Bonder.
