Virginia Sen. Timothy Kaine and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack are the leading contenders to be Hillary Clinton's running mate, according to news reports.

Citing "interviews with multiple Democrats with knowledge of her deliberations," The Washington Post reports that Clinton is considering others, but that the presumptive Democratic nominee "has spoken highly of both in recent days to friends and advisers."

Clinton could announce her choice as early as Friday, according to the Post.

President Barack Obama talked with Clinton in the matter and offered insights on Vilsack and Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, the sources said. They did not share what Obama and Clinton discussed.

Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon declined to comment to the Post.

She is expected to campaign with her choice on Friday or Saturday in Florida, making several stops in the key battleground state, the sources said.

The Democratic National Convention begins on Monday in Philadelphia.

Kaine, 58, who appeared with Clinton at a Virginia rally last week, appears to be the front-runner, according to the Post.

Both he and Vilsack, 65, are being given consideration because of their governing experience.

John Podesta, Clinton's campaign chairman, is heading the search, the Post reports.
