The latest cover of Time and the accompanying story blast the "zero tolerance" policy of the Trump administration that led to more than 2,000 family separations.
The July cover reads "Welcome to America" with a photo illustration of President Donald Trump staring down the crying toddler from a photo earlier this week that went viral.
Time's cover story asserts that America's president is the frontman for the country and the one who dictates what kind of country we are.
"Presidents have many jobs, and one is telling us who we are," Karl Vick's Time cover story begins.
"For the first 240 years of U.S. history, at least, our most revered chief executives reliably articulated a set of high-minded, humanist values that bound together a diverse nation by naming what we aspired to: democracy, humanity, equality," Vick writes.
"Donald Trump doesn’t talk like that."
Vick ventures into the tumultuous past two weeks of Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on migrants trying to enter the border illegally and the separation of families that ensued.
The images of children being separated from their parents and the uproar that has followed has been startling.
Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order that halts the practice of separating families, but it doesn't end "zero tolerance." The order might run afoul of the law that prohibits detaining illegals for more than 20 days.
"The test posed with Trump’s 'zero tolerance' policy is as much about our future as it is about the tragedy of the families separated by its implementation," Vick wrote for Time.
"Trump may have backed down on the specific practice of family separation, but the larger question remains. In the balance between the integrity of the U.S. border with Mexico and a parent’s love for a child, where will we come down?"
