The move by Chief Justice John Roberts to stop the expiration of Title 42 may be temporary, but conservatives celebrated on Twitter nonetheless.
Title 42 allows border agents to send migrants back across the border as part of the COVID emergency declaration. It was put in place by then-President Donald Trump in the early days of the pandemic and was continued by President Joe Biden.
But it was set to expire Wednesday with opponents of the reversal warning it will only worsen the crises of undocumented immigrants already straining border facilities and communities.
Texas and 18 other Republican states sued to stop the Biden administration from ending the policy, and Roberts issued a temporary stay on Monday, giving the White House until 5 p.m. ET Tuesday to respond.
"Thank God," Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk tweeted in response.
"U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts has HALTED the lifting of Title 42 for now," tweeted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. "Texas and other states are insisting that the Court leave Title 42 in place. Today's order is a step in that direction. This helps prevent illegal immigration."
Good. Title 42 will protect our communities from Biden’s reckless border policies.
"Earlier today, I filed a motion before SCOTUS asking to halt the Biden’s (sic) scrapping of Title 42. Just now, SCOTUS returned a decision in our favor," Texas Attorney Gen. Ken Paxton tweeted. "The fight to keep Title 42 in place continues. I will continue to do everything I can in court to ensure our border is secure."
"BIG WIN FROM THE SUPREME COURT!" said Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas. "Our border is out of control, but despite Biden’s best efforts, TITLE 42 STAYS IN PLACE! Now all Biden has to do is re-enact EVERY Trump border policy. It’s the ONLY way to save our country!! Do something NOW Biden!!"
