Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez slammed President Donald Trump's national emergency claims, accusing him of creating an "invented crisis" to gain a political trophy and to please conservative talk show star Rush Limbaugh.
"Satisfying Rush Limbaugh and making sure you have a political trophy is not a national emergency,” Perez told CNN's "New Day," before Trump made his announcement official later in the morning that he was declaring a national emergency at the border.
"This is ridiculous. He will face problems in the Congress, and he will face problems in the court," Perez added.
The House will take up a resolution of disapproval, Perez predicted, and then the Senate "must do it."
"You heard so many Republicans in the run-up to this most recent invented crisis of the president say 'you should not do this,'" said Perez.
Republicans in the Senate who disagree with Trump will then face a "put up and shut up" moment," Perez said.
"Again, I have no doubt that this will then go to the courts," said Perez. "And, again, justifying a national emergency because Rush Limbaugh is chattering in your ear, that’s just not the definition of a national emergency. This is ridiculous, but he’s got to satisfy his base and scratch that itch.”
Perez also discussed the eventual Democratic presidential debates, saying that there will be "random selection" to make sure that there are not preferred candidates on either of the two fights.
