Tom Steyer: Not 'Getting Into the Gutter' With 'Guttersnipe' Trump

(CNN/"New Day")

Billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer, one of 14 liberal leaders targeted by pipe bombs last week, argued Tuesday that "guttersnipe" President Donald Trump has created an "atmosphere of hate," but he's not going to argue personally with him.

"He has continued to demonize people after these events," Steyer told CNN's "New Day" of the president, also accusing him as one who has "created an atmosphere of extreme lawlessness."

Steyer also responded a Trump attack against him on Twitter, when the president called him a "crazed and stumbling lunatic."

"I think what I did that day on Twitter was to say to the president, you should not be spending your time insulting me," said Steyer Tuesday. "You should be spending your time doing your job. Do your job, man. Your job is to pull the country together, and you can't do it. I don't think there is any point in getting into the gutter with a guttersnipe."

Meanwhile, even though Trump has denied that his rhetoric lead to pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc's alleged actions, Steyer said it's the president's actions that are so "obviously wrong."

"I really don't listen to what the president has to say," said Sayer. "I watch what he does, and it's very consistent."

Meanwhile, Steyer didn't answer directly a question about whether he's considering a presidential run.

"We are running what I believe is the largest grassroots organization in the United States to try and make sure that especially young Americans participate in our democracy next Tuesday," he said.
