President Donald Trump has put an end to a CIA program that involved arming rebels in Syria who are fighting government forces.

The Washington Post reports ending the program, which went into effect in 2013 during the Obama administration, is something Russia has been pushing for.

Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on two occasions at the recent G-20 Summit, and it was reported that they reached an agreement on a ceasefire in southwest Syria as the nation's civil war continues. The United States has supported Syrian rebels for years, while the Russians back the Syrian government.

The Post cites U.S. officials as saying Trump's decision to stop arming Syrian rebels came before Trump met with Putin and may be a move designed to show Russia the two countries can work together on things.

The situation in Syria is complicated, but the U.S. and Russia do have one common interest there: fighting Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists.
