Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump Tuesday accused the Obama administration of deliberately sending Syrian refugees to states headed by Republican governors.

"They send them to the Republicans, not to the Democrats, you know, because they know the problem," he told conservative radio talk-show host Laura Ingraham. "Why would we want to bother the Democrats?"

Trump's comments came after Ingraham said he had interviewed Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who said that the Sunshine State has had 43,000 refugees in the past two years.

She noted that California, by contrast, has had only 16,000 refugees in the same period. The state is headed by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown.

"In California, you have a Democrat as a governor; in Florida you have Rick Scott so they send them to the Republicans," Trump said. "Taking these people is absolute insanity."

Earlier Tuesday, Trump slammed Obama on Twitter for his pledge to accept 10,000 refugees over the next year:

The developer's attacks followed House Speaker Paul Ryan's call for a pause in the administration's Syrian refugee settlement program, citing the Paris attacks.

On Monday, half of the nation's governors also urged Obama to suspend the program and called for a full review of the vetting process to ensure that would-be attackers do not slip into the country among the refugees.

"They're talking about hundreds of thousands, potentially," Trump told Ingraham. "Our country is in such trouble."
