More than half of President Barack Obama's Twitter followers are fake, giving him the distinction of leading all American politicians with the most Twitter fans who don't exist.
Of Obama's 36.9 million Twitter followers, 19.5 million are really nonexistent accounts — meaning 53 percent of his followers aren't real,
according to MailOnline, which commissioned the Internet research company
StatusPeople.com to provide the Twitter analytics. And of those who do have real Obama Twitter accounts, only 20 percent of them are active users.

The StatusPeople research found that Vice President Joe Biden has the next highest percentage of fake followers at 46 percent. Only 20 percent of his Twitter pals were active account holders.
In addition, the StatusPeople analysis revealed that 37 percent of White House Twitter accounts are fake, and only 25 percent are active.
The Daily Caller reported Tuesday that First Lady Michelle Obama has nearly 2 million nonexistent people following her Twitter account, accounting for 37 percent of her more than 5 million followers. Twenty-five percent of the first lady's followers were from legitimate, active accounts.
The first lady opened her first Twitter account in January 2013.

The Daily Caller reported on Sept. 20, also based on analytics from StatusPeople.com, which found then that 55 percent of Obama's Twitter followers were fake.
It was reported during the 2012 presidential election that candidates may have been purchasing Twitter followers from companies that sell shell or fake accounts. In August 2012, StatusPeople found that
41 percent of Obama's Twitter followers were fake, compared to 12 percent for Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
Among Republican lawmakers, House Speaker John Boehner and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio lead when it comes to nonexistent Twitter followers, with 33 percent of Boehner's accounts being fake and 29 percent of Rubio's.
Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas and Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, on the other hand, have the most legitimate followers among the nation's lawmakers, with only 11 percent of their Twitter fans being fake.
