Twitter says it has suspended more than 125,000 accounts for promoting or threatening terrorism since last summer.
In a blog post on its site, the social media company says it's "horrified" by violent extremism, like the
shooting in San Bernardino, Calif. by husband-and-wife Islamic State supporters and the
ISIS attacks in Paris, saying Twitter rules "make clear" posts promoting terror are banned.
"We have increased the size of the teams that review reports, reducing our response time significantly," it reports. "We also look into other accounts similar to those reported and leverage proprietary spam-fighting tools to surface other potentially violating accounts for review by our agents."
The Hill reports a month before Twitter's April 2015 terror promotion ban, the Brookings Institution estimated the popular social media site had
deleted at least 1,000 ISIS-supporting accounts.
That would make Twitter's suspension of 125,000 accounts since last July proof the pace has been greatly accelerated, The Hill notes.
Leaders on the Senate Intelligence Committee have introduced legislation to mandate that Internet companies report when they obtain knowledge of terrorist activity on their platforms, modeling the bill after child pornography laws, The Hill reports.
