Jimmy Carter Finds a Renaissance in 2020 Democratic Scramble

Sunday, 19 May 2019 08:49 AM EDT ET

Former President Jimmy Carter has never been known as a key player in Democratic Party politics. But he's re-emerging in the 2020 presidential race as some candidates go to Plains, Georgia, to seek the 94-year-old's advice.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar says Carter's 1976 campaign in the post-Watergate era is relevant as Democrats take on President Donald Trump.

Candidates also say they like hearing Carter's stories of running as an underdog, before his rivals and the national press corps realized his strength.

Carter allies hope the newfound attention sheds positive light on the 39th president's term, which is often remembered for how it ended with the long Iran hostage crisis.

That overshadows Carter's advances on the environment, civil rights and health care.
