Former President Bill Clinton paid tribute to his friend, Vernon Jordan, an influential leader in the civil rights movement, who died Monday night at the age of 85.

Jordan, who never held a formal government job, was a golfing buddy and adviser to Clinton in the 1990s.

“Vernon Jordan was a wonderful friend to Hillary, Chelsea, and me, in good times and bad,” Clinton tweeted on Tuesday. “We worked and played, laughed and cried, won and lost together. We loved him very much and always will.”

And Hillary Clinton wrote on Twitter: “Vernon Jordan was a brave and determined leader in the civil rights and economic justice movements. He will be remembered for the many barriers he helped knock down and the support he gave to so many in the long, unfinished struggle. Rest in peace and power, my friend.”
