Former Vice President Joe Biden leads Democratic presidential contenders in South Carolina by 20 percentage points, according to a Winthrop University poll released Tuesday.

Thirty-seven percent of voters surveyed said they were leaning toward Biden, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., at 17%, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., at 8%, and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., at 7%.

South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg rounded out the top five with 4%.

Of African American Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters, Biden had even higher numbers at 46%.

"African Americans constitute one of the most important constituencies for the Democratic Party," Winthrop Poll Director Scott Huffmon said.

"African Americans can make up more than 60% of the Democratic Presidential Primary vote in South Carolina, which is a much larger portion than in the Iowa Caucus or New Hampshire primary."

The poll also found 93% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters said they disapprove of the way President Donald Trump is handling his job.
