Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers is unveiling a plan to give ID cards to illegal immigrants in the state.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported as part of Evers' budget proposal to be introduced Thursday night, illegal immigrants would also have the option to qualify for driver's permits.
"We're announcing tonight that undocumented folks will be eligible to receive driver's licenses and ID cards," Evers declares, according to excerpts released ahead of the speech, the news outlet reported.
"This makes our roads and our communities safer, and helps strengthen our economy and Wisconsin families."
Evers campaigned on the idea of granting illegal immigrants the chance to qualify for driving permits by taking a test and paying a fee, but state lawmakers are likely to rewrite that portion of the budget proposal — or toss it out entirely, The Hill reported.
The GOP-led legislature already passed bills under former GOP Gov. Scott Walker that limited Evers' powers. He will now work with state lawmakers to finalize and approve a budget, The Hill reported.
