Former Speaker Paul Ryan, who prided himself during his two decades in Congress by returning to Wisconsin every weekend, is moving his family to the Washington D.C. area, Politico reported on Tuesday.
"Now in the private sector, Paul and his family will temporarily rent a house in Maryland, and he’ll be spending time there as well as their family home in Janesville," a Ryan aide said.
The sisters of Janna Ryan, the former speaker’s wife, live in the D.C. area.
The Ryan family, however, are not selling their home in Janesville.
Ryan, who also was a vice presidential candidate, consistently made clear during his time in Congress that his career was based in Washington by necessity, not choice, famously sleeping in his office as a symbol of his refusal to put down roots in the nation’s capital.
Since retiring from the House in January, Ryan has focused on his nonprofit, the American Idea Foundation, and has taken a position on the board of directors of Fox Corp., the Washington Examiner reported.
Ryan has further detached himself from politics in recent months, transferring more than $7 million from his political accounts to the American Idea Foundation, according to Politico.
Ryan also clashed with President Donald Trump last month following the publication of Tim Alberta’s book "American Carnage," in which the former speaker said Trump did not know anything about government.
The president lashed back in a series of tweets, calling Ryan “the failed V.P. candidate” and boasted in a claim that “They gave me standing O’s in the Great State of Wisconsin, & booed him off the stage.”
