Attorney General Bill Barr performed an impossible job as well as could be expected, according to Alan Dershowitz on Newsmax TV.
Earlier Monday, President Donald Trump tweeted Barr will leave his job just before Christmas and will be succeeded on an interim basis by deputy AG Jeff Rosen.
"For 20 years I've been railing against the fact that we are almost the only Western democracy that combines two incompatible roles," Dershowitz told Sean Spicer on "Spicer & Co."
"The attorney general is a political adviser to the president as a member of the Cabinet. His job as a member of the Cabinet is try and make the president reelected and to do his political bidding. But he's also the chief law enforcement officer of the United States. In that capacity, he's supposed to be objective, and neutral, and non-partisan. It is a schizophrenic job. Nobody can do it."
Dershowitz, a constitutional law expert, commended Barr for the job he did.
"Barr did as well as he could in that job under the circumstances," Dershowitz said. "He tried to strike an appropriate balance. Nobody can do it."
Dershowitz cited one choice for attorney general as excellent – much to the frustration of the president who made the selection.
"Bill Clinton picked somebody he didn't know," Dershowitz said. "He did a great thing, he picked somebody he didn't know, Janet Reno. And he regretted it for all of his eight years because he couldn't control her."
Dershowitz said people should not expect Rosen to be much different than Barr in the expected one month he will serve in the role.
"[Rosen is] a very able guy," Dershowitz said. "The proof that it's designed not to bring somebody in who's going to change everything is they're bringing in Barr's deputy. Barr's deputy is going to follow Barr's processes."
