The American people can respond to DirecTV's deplatforming of Newsmax by voting with their dollars, Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., said Friday.
"I can remember months ago when Netflix started showing some stuff that mainly many of the Christian conservative families around the country did not agree with," Moore said on Newsmax's "National Report." "My daughter said to my wife, 'Mom, why are we canceling our subscription?' She said an $11 subscription wouldn't make a difference."
But the next day the headlines said that 350,000 subscriptions had been canceled, Moore noted.
"So I encourage the American people to vote with their dollars and then trust Congress," said Moore. "Accountability is coming and we're going to find out for sure this free press that we allow, it's part of the Constitution that's protected.
"We need to make sure that all voices are heard whether we agree with them or not. You and Netflix and the rest should be available to the American people to hear what you have to say, to share your side of the story as well."
Moore's comments came a day after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., reiterated his support for committee hearings on the censorship of Newsmax by AT&T/DirecTV.
"Now, Newsmax isn't the first one — OAN as well. And I think America should be able to have a choice in the news they are able to get — choice in being able to see it," McCarthy said.
AT&T/DirecTV’s deplatforming of Newsmax from 13 million subscriber homes on Jan. 24 was the second time the service removed a conservative channel in the past year.
DirecTV continues to carry 22 liberal news channels and all receive license fees, but has denied Newsmax any ability to receive similar payments.
According to Nielsen, Newsmax is the fourth highest-rated news channel in the U.S., a top 20 news channel overall, and watched by 25 million Americans on cable. CEO Christopher Ruddy has slammed the cancellation as a "blatant act of political discrimination and censorship."
