Ben Carson told Newsmax TV Thursday that he was a true conservative "who can protect us" and lashed out at the media for trying to "make me out to be some kind of kook."

"They've gone back and found a speech I gave like 20 years ago when I was speculating about how were the Egyptians were able to store grain for seven years and I feel they could have used the pyramids," Carson, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon, told "Newsmax Now" hosts John Bachman and Miranda Khan. "And they said that this is a major tenet of Carson's: grain storage in pyramids!"

He accused news organizations of not discussing his medical or philanthropic accomplishments, including his separation of conjoined twins in 1987 and his providing educational assistance to low-income students through the Carson Scholars Fund.

"They always look for something negative and try to emphasize that," he said. "It just goes to show you how dishonest the media has become."
