Newly sworn-in Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, scoffed Monday at House Democrats – and in particular, their leadership – for rules in the chamber that forbid gender-specific terms such as "mother," "father," and "brother" – or even "he" or "she" – from the "Code of Official Conduct."
Van Duyne, 50, who replaced 8-term Republican Rep. Kenny Marchant from Texas' 24th Congressional District between Dallas and Fort Worth, mocked the changes as trivial and absurd.
"Is that really what we should be talking about now?" Van Duyne told Newsmax TV's "Spicer & Co." "It's ridiculous. It's beyond sensical."
Among other things, she referred to Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., who closed the House session's opening prayer with "Amen. Awoman."
"I really expected to be able to come, and at least the first couple of days, have a sense of decorum and priorities, to be able to work across the aisle and be able to have a conversation and debate about what's important," an exasperated Van Duyne told host Sean Spicer.
"No, we're going to talk about gender-specific terms, like 'mother' and 'daughter' and 'brother.'"
