Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Wednesday that she "cannot support" the continuing resolution that congressional leaders released this week to fund the government through spring.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Tuesday announced a deal on a continuing resolution to keep the government funded just days before the deadline to avert a shutdown.
However, several Republicans spoke out against the measure or voiced displeasure with the process, including Van Duyne, who said, "I can't," when asked on "Wake Up America" if she will support the spending measure.
"First of all, we just got it last night and we're going to be expected to vote on it here shortly," she said. "But I look at this and I have fought for years, and we have all complained" about the national debt.
"We have said we're not going to continue the same level of spending that we saw during the pandemic, and not only have we continued it, but we've increased it. We cannot continue to put that burden on our kids, on our future grandkids. It is absolutely ridiculous."
Van Duyne added: "There's so much waste, fraud and abuse and … it's a lazy way to be able to govern. We need to look at our budget. We need to take it apart, find out where it needs to be prioritized and what is just being wasted.
"I cannot support a [continuing resolution] that continues that level of spending."
