Donald Trump has unified the Republican Party, but the true unifier is rival Ted Cruz, The Family Leader CEO Bob Vander Plaats told Newsmax TV on Friday.

"Trump has been a great unifier of the Republican Party," Vander Plaats told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth in an interview.

"He's got [Mitt] Romney. He's got Lindsey Graham. He's got John McCain going along with Rush Limbaugh, Steve Deace and many other conservatives saying they're never going to go for Donald Trump," he said. "That's a huge issue in our party."

Cruz's performance Thursday in the debate in Detroit points to his ability to bring the fractured GOP together, Vander Plaats told Hayworth.

"You had a couple of candidates who wanted to make it a cage match, but what you saw of Ted Cruz last night — he gave clear policy decisions and defenses," he said. "If you want somebody who's presidential, who's got clear and concise vision on policy, Ted Cruz would be your guy."
