President Donald Trump needs to stand his ground and wait for Congress to allocate funds to build a border wall, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay told Newsmax TV.
A partial government shutdown began at the end of last week after lawmakers were unable to come to a bipartisan agreement on providing money for the border wall Trump has promised to have built between the United States and Mexico. DeLay would like to see Trump and Republicans deploy a calculated strategy to overcome Democratic opposition to the wall funding.
"The president's gotta stick in there," DeLay told Wednesday's "Newsmax Now." "He better not give in, he better not cave, because he'll have the worst two years that you've ever seen.
"It's never easy to work or deal with [House Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi. She is as tough as they come. When she has made up her mind, she's not going to shift.
"The only way that the president can do this is not take a day off, not take a minute off. He's got to drive this message to the American people and get the poll numbers changing so that Nancy Pelosi and especially the Democrat senators start feeling that pressure coming from back home."

DeLay added Republican lawmakers would be smart to support Trump's efforts.
"The Republicans in the Senate are in a box, and they can't get out of that box," he said. "They have to support the president or they're gonna look awfully foolish."
