Actor Dean Cain said Thursday that “epic mismanagement” and “failure to prepare” on the part of California’s elected officials caused the devastating wildfires that have reduced much of the Los Angeles area to rubble and ash.

“It's [California Gov.] Gavin Newsom and [LA Mayor] Karen Bass making terrible decisions,” Cain told Newsmax’s “The Chris Salcedo Show.” “And this is the result of those policies. People are dying. Homes are destroyed. Absolute chaos. It looks like someone dropped a nuclear weapon in the middle of Pacific Palisades and cleaned it out.

"It's the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen. The reason I left California is I could see the writing on the wall. These things weren't being taken care of. They're diverting money everywhere else. And I was terrified. I said, ‘You know what? I got to go.’ … It's just absolutely devastating and I feel like it could have been prevented for sure.”

When asked if California, a solidly blue state, was undergoing a political sea change in the midst of the wind-driven firestorms, Cain said he hopes residents start to see things differently and vote for “competent leaders.”

“When your house burns down and you don't have power for six days and all of these things happen, you tend to change your thinking,” he said. “At least I hope that's the case. I mean, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

"You need to change things up, California. You need to put in competent leaders. I mean, look no further than Rick Caruso, who I voted for for mayor in this last election, when I was still in California. He had a private firefighting group protect his big old mall and guess what? Right there in Pacific Palisades, it didn't burn.”

Responding to reports about state officials earmarking money to prevent illegal aliens from being deported and “Trump-proofing” the state from the incoming 47th president, Cain said, “It's another one of the reasons I left California.”

“I'm just so sick of those terrible policies,” he said. “Who are you taking care of? Your taxpaying base? … Your first job as a government official is to … keep the health and safety of those who elected you and that is not what's happening. They’re going on all these different tirades. ‘We're going to try to Trump-proof California, we're going to do this, we're going to do that.’ All these virtue-signaling things that sound so good, that just tell you that you're doing really well, that things are good."

“My sister hasn't had power, but for like sporadic moments, for the last nine days or eight days, whatever it's been; it seems like it's been two months,” he continued. “My buddy's out of his house. He's living in his in-laws’ place for now.

"They don't know that their house is 100% still there. They're in the evacuation zone. I have other guys inside the evacuation zone. Hopefully people will just go, Look, the No. 1 thing you have to take care of are your people, and that's where your priorities need to be.”
